As of Sept 9, 2006, USAA posted about "Security upgrades coming soon" for online banking members:

USAA is making three improvements to the way you access your sensitive account information and soon you can take advantage of them. Here's how you will upgrade and personalize your security access:

  1. Online ID: You'll create a personalized, unique Online ID to log on to usaa.com. Once you've created this ID, you will use it instead of your USAA number.

Many members asked for this ability, and so we're changing the way you log on to the site. The ability to customize and change your own Online ID creates a more secure and convenient way for you to access and manage your USAA accounts.

  2. New security questions: You'll be asked to create three security questions that will be used to verify your identity. Only you will know the answers you've chosen.

These questions will be used along with certain account information to provide stronger protection if you ever forget or need to change your log on information. We will also randomly ask for the answers to these security questions at certain times when you access your account details on usaa.com. This helps ensure no unauthorized persons will be able to access your accounts.

  3. Phone password: You will set up a unique word to be used as your identity password. Whenever you need to call us, you will use this as your identity password. This password will be separate from your usaa.com password.

The ability to customize and change your phone password creates a more secure environment for us to verify your identity over the phone.

Next steps

You don't need to do anything now. In the coming months, you'll be prompted to make these updates — both on usaa.com and over the phone.
