OpenID Wiki:Cleanup

This meta-page discusses the OpenID Wiki cleanup project. This page is currently a work in progress, so the information below should be considered incomplete. Feel free to help improve it!

Contents

Introduction

Much of the information on the wiki has become out of date. Other information is difficult to find. To remedy this, we are currently working on cleaning up and refactoring the various pages here.

This project began in March 2008 in response to a post on the OpenID general mailing list.

Primary objectives are to:

  • Identify out of date pages and bring them up to date
  • Improve the navigation and user experience throughout the Wiki
  • Identify discrepancies between translations
  • Fix any errors in the wiki installation
  • Make the wiki look like the main OpenID.net site

Some preliminary information was compiled at OpenID Website Issues. This page aims to expand on that and create a more comprehensive list of tasks that need to be accomplished.

Navigation Improvement

Problem

It's difficult to locate different pages throughout the site, as evidenced by the number of pages which have become stale.

Observations

  • Taking a look a the list of pages in the general namespace shows that various naming schemes have been used. Some pages are stored as children of other page (using a '/' in the URL), whereas others just use a similar name.
  • There isn't an established naming convention. For example, MediaSightings uses camel case while many other's don't.
  • While the main page has some organization, it isn't consistent. For example, why is there an OpenID Europe News page but no news from the other OpenID foundations?

Proposed Solutions

  • Generate a simple and scalable hierarchy under which pages should be organized.
  • Re-organize the main page to be more consistent (and more visually appealing) in order to make locating pages more intuitive.

Discussion

None. Feel free to post comments here.

Translation

Problem

There isn't a consistent naming scheme for translations, and it's difficult to tell what translations are available/current for a given page.

Observations

  • Some pages use the naming convention "Page Name (lang)". (Example: Main Page (fr))
  • Some pages use the naming convention "Foreign Page Name" (Example: Fondation OpenID)
  • There is a translation article list page, but it's out of date.
  • There is a translation page, but it's even more out of date.
  • There is no consistent way to denote the other translations available for a given page.

Proposed Solutions

  • Create a naming convention for non-English pages.
  • Move any pages that don't adhere to this convention.
  • Create a template that can be added to the top of a page that automatically finds and lists translations (see wiki.laptop.org for an example of this).
  • Create a translation dashboard that lists pages that need to be translated/updated.

Discussion

None. Feel free to post comments here.
