OpenID Retail Advisory Committee Overview

(a) Charter

(i) Committee Name: Retail Advisory Committee (RAC)

(ii) Purpose

The purpose of the RAC is to solicit input and feedback from retailers utilizing online channels (web, mobile, interactive TV, etc.) to better serve their customers and prospects.  This group is similar to the Content Provider Advisory Committee which was formed in 2009 to serve news, media, and entertainment organizations providing content to their users, members, and customers via online channels.

(iii) Scope

The scope of activities of the RAC will be determined by its members, but in general will include the following

      • Outbound communication from the OpenID Foundation (OIDF), Identity Providers (IDPs), and Social Network Providers (SNPs) to Retailers on progress and plans for OpenID and related technologies (OAuth, Portable Contacts, Activity Streams, Webfinger, Salmon, XAuth, Backplane, etc.) that may be of interest to Retailers.
      • Direct input and feedback from Retailers to the OIDF, IDPs, and SNPs on the needs and expectations of Retails and their customers.
      • Collaboration between IDPs and SNPs serving Retailers
      • Collaboration between Retailers looking to leverage OpenID and related technologies to serve their customers better and achieve improved business results

The following are out of scope for the RAC

      • Any specifications or intellectual property work associated with initiatives for Retailers.  These activities will be managed by specific OIDF committees and working groups if/when required.

(iv) Anticipated membership

Ideally the RAC will be comprised of cross-disciplinary representatives from representative IDPs, SNPs, and Retailers including product development, product management, marketing, and sales functions.

(vi) Language in which the RAC will conduct business

English initially.  If international subcommittees are formed, they will determine the optimal language(s) for their activities.

(b) Organization and Activities

(i) Organization

      • Following the approach used elsewhere in the OIDF, the RAC will appoint or elect a Chair and Vice-Chair to manage and facilitate the activities of the committee.
      • All members of the committee will have access to the materials and resources created and utilized by the RAC
      • The RAC will utilize collaboration tools as deemed necessary by the members - email lists, blogs, wikis, chat, etc.
      • Frequency and type of interactions will be determined by the membership and will likely include face to face meetings at industry events (Internet Retailer, eTail, Web2.0, OpenID Summits, Internet Identity Workshop, etc.), webinars, email listservs, etc.  Ideally there will be at least one annual face to face meeting per year and several live interactive webinars supplemented by ad-hoc, thematic email discussion forums.  For example, earlier this year Sears hosted an OpenID User Experience Summit at their headquarters in Chicago.

(ii) Topics

Topics to be discussed by the RAC or subcommittees of the RAC will be determined by the membership, but will likely include areas such as:

      • Lessons learned in other industry sectors adopting OpenID (community, content, government, etc.)
      • Best practices for Retailers in areas including user experience (UX), customer data management, maximizing utilization and benefits, community and commerce functions, etc.
      • Needs analysis and market requirements unique to Retailers and their customers compared to other market segments
      • Relationship between multiple open standard and vendor specific services including OpenID, OAuth, Portable Contacts, Activity Streams, Webfinger,  Google Buzz, Yahoo Updates,
Facebook Open Graph/Graph API, Microsoft LiveID & Messenger Connect, services from LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace, AOL, etc.

(c) Joining the RAC
